Hidden House
CloseA home that reveals itself gradually, balancing privacy and openness.
Concealing a contemporary extension behind a period home is common in inner-city contexts, but here concealment becomes the defining idea.

Privacy from neighbouring apartments drives the design of a series of full-height pivoting timber screens. These elements allow the living spaces to open fully to the garden or close down to provide shade and seclusion, giving the occupants control over how the home is experienced throughout the day.

The original home is carefully retained and restored, contrasting with the more open and robust character of the rear extension. A stone kitchen anchors the living spaces, with the dining area extending directly to a terrace and garden beyond.

A lowered lounge area defines the living zone within the open plan, while large areas of glazing and fine framing reinforce the relationship between interior and landscape.

A restrained palette of stone, timber and steel brings durability and consistency, allowing the timber screens to remain the primary architectural element.

The result is a home that offers both openness and privacy, shaped by how and when it chooses to reveal itself.
