Malvern House
CloseA family home shaped around connection, inside and out.
Family demands and heritage constraints come together to rework a double-fronted Edwardian house into a more open and connected home.

A two-storey addition is set well back from the street in response to heritage requirements, incorporating an existing underground cellar within the new footprint. This constraint informs the planning, resulting in an extra-wide living space that feels open, light-filled and central to the life of the home.

The living area is oriented to the garden and pool, with a north-facing window seat and large sliding doors strengthening the relationship between inside and out. A slot window at the kitchen allows for passive supervision, supporting the day-to-day rhythms of family life.

Upstairs, the main bedroom is linked visually to the spaces below through a central void, with full-height glazing and a skylight drawing light into the centre of the plan and maintaining connection across levels.

A restrained palette of white brick, limed timber and plaster sits in quiet contrast to the detailing of the original home, allowing the spatial qualities of the extension to remain the focus.

The extension’s position also allows the existing roof space to be used as a study, while integrated joinery conceals storage and utility throughout the home, supporting a more ordered and functional environment.

The result is a home that brings family life together through careful planning, connection to landscape and a strong relationship between spaces.
