Ballarat Barn
CloseA barn-like extension shaped around landscape, volume and family life.
The project reworks a Victorian home to better engage with its generous north-facing backyard, placing landscape at the centre of the design.

A mature silver birch tree becomes the organising element, with two pavilion forms arranged around it — one housing the main living spaces and the other accommodating storage, garage and a loft.

Taking the form of two pavilions – one directly connected to the original home and the other containing the garage with teenager’s loft – our design puts the backyard and its significant tree at the centre.

Material selection reinforces the distinction between old and new. Timber cladding and shingles give the extension texture and depth, while the original weatherboard home is retained and adapted to suit contemporary living.

Internally, the kitchen, dining and living areas are arranged as a single open space that extends directly to the garden. In warmer months, the house opens fully to the outdoors, while a heated slab and double glazing ensure comfort through Ballarat’s colder seasons.

The result is a home that centres family life around landscape, with form and volume used to create a sense of openness and connection. Start your project
